There’s a million snowboard contests you could do but this one is about a little bit more.” Competitors race at the 17th annual Nate Chute Classic on March 20, 2016. “Before we get to the snowboard contest we talk about why we’re here and what we’re doing it for. “I try to make a big deal out of it not being a snowboard contest,” Moulder said. But they will also gather for Chute, and the Nate Chute Foundation, and to shine light on the epidemic of suicide that still plagues Montana nearly 20 years later. This March, Moulder and dozens of others will reunite for the 20th annual Nate Chute Classic - the name was shortened a few years ago - to continue what has become the second-longest running banked slalom in the United States, one that draws competitors from throughout the Northwest and offers a $4,000 purse. They called it the Nate Chute Hawaiian Classic. Six months after that, in March 2000, Moulder and dozens of other friends, family and loved ones, reeling from grief and unsure what to do with it, gathered on Big Mountain to put on a race of their own. Three years later, Chute died by suicide, not long after graduating from Whitefish High School. The shop’s owners, in a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Flathead Valley’s brutally long winters, called the banked slalom and boardercross the Hawaiian Classic. It was a loosely organized race in their hometown, Whitefish, and put on by a local ski and snowboard shop called Snow Frog. Boarding in a snowstorm at night can be terrifying as you careen down a mountain with very limited visibility.The first time Shane Moulder and Nate Chute entered a snowboard competition, they were barely into their teenage years. Not only that, but the visuals change drastically with the day/night cycle and weather.
The conditions of a given day have an effect on difference challenges and your overall snowboarding experience. The weather system, on the other hand, does a nice job of giving you different looks at each of the mountains. Every sponsor has the same first challenge, same second challenge and so on and it doesn't help to freshen the experience after you've invested a handful of hours.
The list is populated by many of the sport's biggest players, but I would've liked to see the challenge types mixed up much more than they are. As you continue to complete challenges and earn more and more influence points you'll have the opportunity to strut your skills for a set of sponsors. Everything seemed just a touch steeper and ramps all the more present.
I also found that ramping off of big jumps was more prevalent in Big Air Edition. The snowboarding has also been imbued with a new sense of speed that, when you get going down a steep surface, does a great job of blurring the environment and limiting your vision so as to really sell the effect. Moving from side to side and tricking off of different surfaces is a bit easier this time around though there are still instances when you'll be grinding while appearing sideways on a rail. Thankfully the snowboarding mechanics and the feel of edging your way down a mountain have been nicely refined for Big Air Edition.
